Road Conditions / Maintenance

Alameda County provides many of the basic services that affect the daily lives of everyone who lives, works, visits and commutes within the unincorporated areas of Alameda County. The unincorporated areas within Alameda County include the urban communities of Ashland, Castro Valley, Cherryland, Fairview, San Lorenzo, Sunol and most of the rural outlying areas of the eastern portion of the county.

The County:

  • Maintains 480 center line miles of roadway and county right of ways.
  • Provides emergency service and routine maintenance of 78 traffic signals in the unincorporated areas of Castro Valley, San Lorenzo, Livermore and Pleasanton.
  • Provides Emergency service and routine maintenance of 95 traffic signals through contract for the Cities of Dublin, Piedmont and Albany.
  • Provides emergency service and routine maintenance of 7,000 streetlights in the unincorporated areas of Castro Valley, San Lorenzo, Livermore and Pleasanton.
  • Provides Emergency service and routine maintenance of 12,000 streetlights through contract for the Cities of Dublin, Hayward, Piedmont, Albany and the University of California East Bay.
  • Repairs and replaces 45,000 road signs within the unincorporated areas of Alameda County.

If a problem constitutes an emergency and occurs before or after normal business hours or on a weekend or holiday, please contact the Alameda County Sheriff's Office at 510.667.7721. Examples of an emergency would be traffic signal malfunctions, missing stop/yield/traffic control signs, dangerous obstructions in the roadway, or serious roadway or flood control channel flooding.
